lara + bucky

A while ago, in the big ol' world of twitter, Rich heard a voice, in the sea of 140-character voices, ask if anyone knew where one could rent a pink limousine in Buffalo for her wedding. Rich immediately wrote back (with no idea where one could obtain a pink limousine) and told her we were going to have to shoot her wedding. As luck would have it, she thought so too, we had her date open and not long after, we received her mind-blowing invitation, which she said she wanted to look like a gay-club flier. It was just sick. She's a graphic designer, and we could clearly tell she was going to have the kind of wedding we only get to shoot once in our career. So, this Saturday, we found ourselves at Lara + Bucky's ridiculously rad wedding.
Despite that kindof being an endorsement of the usefulness of Twitter for photographers - I later found out that she never, ever checked her "@" messages, just posted through the web, and emailed us anyway - clearly serendipity. So, the only wedding we ever "booked" through Twitter turned out to have nothing at all to do with Twitter :).

Anyway - when people ask why we don't have Twitter accounts anymore - that's a big part of why :).

Sorry, that was an unnecessary tangent from a post we're going to necessarily talk ALL over.
Though I know you miss feeling like a whole world of people out there are dying to hear your incredibly witty, tiny thoughts :)
Oh pink hair streaks to match the dress? Hell yeah.
No, I don't have the visual from the merkin discussion. Interesting side note: I once signed up for a word-a-day e-mail list and got "merkin" as one of the day's vocab words. I thought it was the greatest thing that had ever happened to me - clearly the list was being run by another 12-year-old in an adult body. :)
I just think it's funny to yell, "Quit jerkin' my merkin!!!" Too much?? All I know is I saw the hot pink wedding dress and just got this whole "Oh shit, it's on" vibe for the day.
We started doing photos ahead of time, but got rained inside - luckily we were at one of our favorite spots - the botanical gardens, so it was just like being outdoors anyway :)
The rain has been really kicking our butts lately. I would have been crushed if another outdoor ceremony had gotten pushed indoors this weekend. Luckily (and Lucky - as in Laura and Bucky are known as "Team Lucky" :) ) we had plenty of time for photos and plenty of time to wait out the rain for a while since the reception was going to be held in the center dome of the gardens. And speaking of the gardens - Mary Rose did yet another bend-over-backward-doing-somersaults job helping get this one right. Mary, you rock.....maybe not quite as hard as Team Lucky, but I'm not sure Lemmy himself rocks as hard as Team Lucky. For real.
Are these lashes for real? Hell yeah.
Here's the thing - everyone wants to have fun at their wedding, but then a lot of the times, it gets taken so seriously; there are tears over the pasta not being right, the flowers being the wrong shade, it rains, someone causing the day to run late or whatever, and it sucks. It sucks, not because the tiny thing that went wrong actually mattered, but because there's so much pressure for the day to be perfect that it becomes more about throwing the "perfect" party than being able to let go and have fun. Lara + Bucky they just had one hell of a time.
I hear ya - just have fun out there, wedding day couples. Nothing brings the day back, you only get to enjoy it once. Have FUN, whatever that is for you - make your wedding photographer take photos of you running from topiary :). Do things no one you know has ever done before. Line your aisle with pink flamingos...
Read Plato in the rain :)
And dance down the aisle :)
After a few minutes, the rain stopped, the umbrellas all went down and - no shit - sunlight landed directly on Lara and Bucky. I'm just kneeling there, firing away, just smilin' :).
So, since it sort of rained out our portraits and the sun came out mid-ceremony, Lara + Bucky were the best ever and gave us another chunk of time to shoot them, which I was so ridiculously happy for. I really could've shot these two all day.
Gaaah - excellently beautiful!
I swear, I think the folks at the gardens spent more time collecting flamingos during the reception than anything else. First they lined the aisle, then they got to decorate the gardens, then they lined the walk out.
So, Lara did a TON of work for her details - she made all the bouquets and boutonnieres, and they were perfect and whimsical, and it was so much fun to shoot her day - there were just awesome, fun, truly unique details.
And because I was trying to keep the post from being 15 years long, a little bouquet collage :)
What, you thought she didn't have the most killer candy center pieces and candy buffet ever?
Hah :) There are details and then there are details...
...and then you look over at the PEZ-covered wedding cake with Lucky-ized Barney and Betty cake toppers, and a damned butterfly is just chilling there...probably freaking the hell out, too, because there's SO much amazing color and not a damned bit of nectar.
So, we didn't want to shoot the rings at the beginning of the night when folks were still partaking in the candy buffet, so by the end, the Good N Plenty's were pretty much our option, but it worked pretty sweetly with Lara's pink ring. (And Mary Rose, I'm so sorry if we made a giant mess with this!!)
We definitely made a giant mess. That's how it goes when we start throwing candy around...
Also - as soon as our contract is ready for an upgrade, shooting into the back of a 4G's "retina" display sold me - holy crap that looks good shooting video! Wow - holy nerd aside, I can't believe you included this shot of me staring at a 4G. :) I'm a dork and you're an enabler.
I love you, nerd and all :) And I may be an enabler, but it's only because I'm secretly an addict... where is my Angry Birds?!
I KNEW that's the reason you've been pushing the iPad - Angry Birds HD. And back to our regularly-scheduled blog post....dancin'!
dancin!
So, clearly you don't have people as fun and awesome as L+B with friends, equally fun and awesome, without it being a sick, sick party. First, though, a little tradition :)
And then onto the killer party...
And maybe my favorite shot of the whole damned day, Lara and one of her best friends since forever...and yeah, it was more than hot enough in the gardens to start stripping.

I went over to Bucky, who was drinking some kind of crazy, aged-plum brandy, shook his hand and told him how they kindof ruined us for a bit. It's not entirely kosher on most of these wedding blog things we all do to say something was your favorite you've ever shot - but here we are. You all know we always are exactly who we say we are on here. We're dorks, we're happy, we work insanely hard to get things right and we're brutally hard on ourselves. So, tonight as we post this, our hats are off to Team Lucky, who did it the way we'd want to do it and I would have had a deeply visceral feeling of disappointment if we hadn't gotten to be the ones to shoot you two. Mazel Tov!
